New Initiative Launches to Support U.S. Grid Reliability As Risks Grow
The Reliable Grid Project, a national network of experts from the consumer, technical, policy, academic and communications sectors, has launched to address rising concerns about the United States’ aging power grid, surging electricity demand, worsening extreme weather and widespread confusion about how to keep energy reliable and affordable. The Reliable Grid Project provides nonpartisan, accessible resources and original analysis to cut through misinformation and support a stronger, more affordable energy system.
The Reliable Grid Project includes experts on national grid systems and power supply, as well as state and regional experts in the nation’s critical energy regions, including California, Texas and states served by PJM Interconnection.
Drawing on this national and regional expertise, the initiative tackles the grid’s most urgent challenges—from rising electricity costs and strained system capacity, to geopolitical instability and the safety risks posed by the country’s aging infrastructure and overreliance on vulnerable fuel sources.
While established technologies including wind, solar, battery storage, demand response and energy efficiency are scaling fast to meet these challenges, public understanding of their role within today’s evolving power system remains inconsistent.
The Reliable Grid Project equips media and decisionmakers with accurate, unbiased analysis about the performance of all grid systems and energy resources—helping to clarify what’s working, what’s not, and where reliability and affordability can be strengthened.
“Reliable electricity depends on reliable information,” said Sarah Hinde, executive director of The Reliable Grid Project. “Grid operators, policymakers and the media need timely, factual and understandable information to keep up with our fast-changing energy landscape. Amid growing challenges in accessing impartial information, The Reliable Grid Project was formed to act as a trusted and credible resource.”
“Decisionmakers entrusted to ensure that America's communities have access to reliable and affordable energy need to be able to have confidence in the integrity of the information they are basing their decisions on. The Reliable Grid Project offers the kind of independent analysis and education necessary to build that public trust,” said Dr. Dustin Mulvaney, professor of environmental studies at San José State University and contributor to The Reliable Grid Project.
“Electricity reliability events can spark just as much confusion as concern,” said Ashanti Washington, director of media relations for The Reliable Grid Project. “When the grid is under pressure, our job is to help journalists and the public find clarity when it matters most.”
