Asbestos to be removed from Virginia school to prevent eventual onset of mesothelioma cancer
Following an asbestos discovery at Dutrow Elementary School, Newport News plans to test all district buildings.
After high percentages of asbestos were discovered in Dutrow Elementary School’s ceiling tiles, school district officials in Newport News, Virginia have decided to test all 12 Newport News public school buildings–in order to ensure the air isn’t contaminated with asbestos.
The high levels of asbestos were discovered at Dutrow Elementary School during routine testing prior to replacing the building’s heating and ventilation systems. Employees working in Dutrow Elementary School were relocated, and the tiles are being removed following federal and state regulations.
Airborne asbestos particles pose a serious health risk to those exposed. The hazardous materials can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Mesothelioma is the most rare and aggressive disease to arise from asbestos exposure, and affects nearly 3,000 Americans each year. The disease most commonly attacks the mesothelium.
Treatment of the asbestos cancer, such as mesothelioma chemotherapy and radiation, can be painful. Unfortunately, there is no mesothelioma cure, and so, patients must fight their battle with the help of clinical and complementary therapies. Mesothelioma doctors often recommend participation in a clinical trial as well.
Spokeswoman Tracy Brooks said officials do not expect to find asbestos in the air. The district is also testing the administration, telecommunications and service center buildings.
The district plans to also test portable buildings at McIntosh, Riverside, South Morrison and Yates elementary schools. No major work, except for the Dutrow project, has been planned.
