Asbestos, Mold Located in U of Cincinnati Dorm
During renovations at the Morgens Hall dormitory at the University of Cincinnati, workers have uncovered asbestos, mold, and lead-based paint.
Students who had applied to live in Morgens for the fall semester may have to find another place to live if the health issues are not dealt with before the start of classes in the fall.
One employee working on the renovations, who asked to remain anonymous, said “Oh there’s mold, asbestos, lead paint…they [supervisors] just tell you to be careful.”
That employee has been working on renovating the ceilings in Morgens Hall for about two weeks.
The mold problem was first found by the electricians working in the building. The electricians become ill due to prolonged exposure to the virulent mold.
Asbestos locations include the balconies of the building, and mold has been found in the basement and bathrooms.
Asbestos inhalation has been linked to the rare cancer mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can affect the lining of the abdomen, heart, or lungs. Asbestos is also linked to asbestosis, a chronic inflammation of the lungs leading to severe shortness of breath.
The University has yet to notify any former residents of the dorm.
“I would think [UC would notify the public],” said the anonymous worker. “They don’t have asbestos removal companies for nothing. I came on the job and everybody was wearing [respiratory masks]. I was like, ‘What do we need these for? Is there something I should know?’ ”
The University has not yet announced when the mold and asbestos abatement will be completed.
