Good news: Hungary poised to regain disease-free status soon!

If there are no further outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in the period until 31 May, Hungary could be declared FMD-free, Agriculture Minister István Nagy said on public television on Saturday.

Nagy noted that the 21-day incubation period for the disease had long since passed since the last outbreak. One month after Hungary is declared FMD-free, the European Union could remove all restrictions on the country’s farm products, clearing the way for the restart of livestock and food exports from the end of June, he said.

Nagy highlighted a number of measures the government has taken to mitigate the impact of the FMD outbreaks on local farmers. To assist hog farmers in areas affected by restrictions, he said the government was offering compensation up to 40pc of the farmgate market price at slaughterhouses. That measure has facilitated the sale of around 10,000 hogs a week in the region, he added.
